Those who don't wish to travel far and who would like to escape from the fast pace of everyday life will find an atmosphere of serenity and cosiness here. The Wolfgangsee is the heart of the Salzkammergut. The lake, the mountains, pastures, meadows and forests, and villages with old alleyways and farmyards invite you to spend a holiday. The Wolfgangsee was designated a reference site for water quality by the EU, due to the excellent characteristics of its water.
This holiday region has a long history. It has been significantly characterised by the period in which the imperial court used it as its summer residence. For 60 years – from 1854 to 1914 – Franz Joseph visited the summer resort on an annual basis and with that created a tradition that can today still be felt in many areas.
The dreamy village of St. Gilgen is located on the western shores of the lake. The district became famous as the residence of Mozart's mother and his sister Nannerl. The village experienced its first heyday as a summer resort after the Second World War, and in particular as the preferred holiday resort of the former German Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl.
